The Magic of Herding

How dogs exploit the indecision of sheep

The scientists found that although random behavior is typically considered an obstacle to controlling a small collective, the indecisiveness of the sheep was actually a benefit to the dogs in the “splitting” task. Ted Pavlic, a computational biologist and professor at Arizona State University said the findings could apply to any situation where someone needs to guide a group of individuals with whom they can’t directly communicate. Raissa D’Souza, a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of California, Davis, praised the scientists’ clever use of real world data and agreed that the findings could be useful in the context of robot swarms, particularly for search and rescue.
