The post-neoliberalism moment
Anyone advocating neoliberal policies is now persona non grata in Washington, D.C.
For our purposes, it refers to a set of policy ideas that became strongly associated with the so-called Washington Consensus: a mix of deregulation, trade liberalization, and macroeconomic prudence that the United States encouraged countries across the globe to embrace. Policy principals ranging from U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan have been explicit in criticizing " oversimplified market efficiency" and proposing an alternative centered far more on resilience. Writing in 2020, the Cato Institute's Scott Lincicome a vast gulf between affected regions: Some American towns thrived with new investments, while others were "still reeling from a trade shock that ended a decade ago."
