The Pour-igin of Species
We used ChatGPT Vision to identify animals on close to 1,500 wine labels to see if we could predict the price and quality of a bottle based on the animal on the label.
Inverts are a very consistent group, found huddled around the median price and rating with a slight lean towards the bad-cheap quadrant (with the exception of Les Asteries’ Saint-Émilion Grand Cru at $99.95 and 4.2 stars). This category is filled with classic mythical creatures: griffins, unicorns and dragons, but you’ll also find some weird things: ladybug-crab hybrids, chupacabras, and flying donkeys. Interestingly, Argentina’s El Enemigo winery produced not only the highest-rated bottle but also an incredible deal: their 4.2-star chardonnay features the exact same logo as the 4.7-star heavy hitter, but costs $25 instead of $130.
