The smarter AI gets, the more stuff it makes up

‘Hallucinations’, where the machines invent what they think we want to hear, are growing. Now that’s properly scary

Elon Musk, for example, has spent the GDP of a small country developing Grok, his AI, and he said the technology “may be the biggest risk humanity has ever faced” and that there’s “a 10 to 20 per cent chance” it leads to the apocalypse. The many copyright-linked disputes about AI right now, from the government’s bickering in the House of Lords to writers and actors fighting in Hollywood, are all about a looming time when almost any sort of content you can imagine is available, almost instantly. Search in the near future for, say, the chancellor giving her spending review speech, or the president of the United States having a fight in the Oval Office, and what will you get?
