Going to the table above, rapier is typically seen as a light and agile weapon compared to medieval swords – and thus, unsurprisingly, DnD gives it weight of only 2 lbs. Greataxe, with its (relatively) heavy shaft and lightweight head, was incredibly quick and agile weapon – yet it was still powerful enough to split riveted mail. A sword or any other melee weapon needs to be light enough to be easy and quick in use, but heavy enough to support the edge, parry strikes and give the blow weight.
