The USAID Shutdown Puts Millions of African Lives at Risk

HIV research programs have been halted, and many treatment clinics are still closed, despite a waiver for “life-saving” humanitarian aid.

This work, which is trying to confirm the usefulness of an innovative form of HIV care, was launched three years ago by Georgetown Global Health Nigeria, a leading partner of the US Agency for International Development in the country. Despite the emergency waiver issued last week to exempt “life-saving” humanitarian assistance from the pause to US overseas aid, many USAID-funded clinics and research programs in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan countries remain shuttered—including many working on HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention. “I know many staff of some clinics and centers who have been asked to stay at home,” says Ngozi Nwosu Juba, executive director of Vision Spring Initiatives, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) that supports marginalized communities in Nigeria.
