Augustus commissioned hundreds of these statues to send a uniform message to all of his subjects, showing everyone in the empire that a great and powerful man governed them. So in addition to making America look like a land of opportunity and promise, artists were asked to remind people to maybe take their kids (even dull John!) It kills you slowly, as sores and fevers in the first few weeks give way to dementia, weakness, blindness, deafness, and, years or even decades later, death.
