There’s Another Chance to See the Northern Lights This Week

Don’t worry if you missed them in May—due to another geomagnetic storm, the northern lights might again be seen at lower latitudes across the US and Europe, from as early as Tuesday night.

Well, get ready to potentially see them again, or for the first time: The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) predicts light displays will again appear in unusual places this week, starting on Tuesday. Regarding Europe, the UK Met Office has predicted “a peak chance of Strong Geomagnetic Storm (G3) conditions on Wednesday 24th of July.” This, the weather service said in a space weather forecast on July 23, “may result in auroral displays down to Northern Ireland, northern England, and similar geomagnetic latitudes, albeit impeded by the near-full moon and limited moments of darkness.” In the southern hemisphere, the Met Office predicts “auroral displays over Tasmania and southern parts of New Zealand.” The administration watches sunspot regions, checking for possible outbursts of solar material, or “coronal mass ejections,” that may be directed at Earth and cause these colorful light displays at higher latitudes.
