This 3D printed circuit board that dissolves in water could finally solve our E-waste problem | This study is putting forward an alternative to our notoriously hard to recycle circuit boards.

This study is putting forward an alternative to our notoriously hard to recycle circuit boards.

The team designed this system with commonly used tools: a standard FDM 3D printer, readily available PVA filament, and liquid metal you can mix from ingredients ordered online. This “local recycling” model reduces energy use and eliminates toxic chemicals from the process, not to mention it would be a great boon for sustainable electronics prototyping. The researchers optimized nozzle sizes, channel dimensions, and wall thickness to ensure the boards conducted electricity reliably while remaining easy to dissolve.
