This nuclear plant was set to close. Then Meta stepped in to power AI data centers
A nuclear plant in Illinois, is the latest power plant saved by the tech industry after Meta signed a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy.
Allen called the partnership unsurprising and said he expects that the Meta-Constellation deal will not be the last of its kind because it’s faster and less costly to invest in an existing power plant than to start from scratch. Google and Amazon are collaborating with companies to develop new small modular reactors, which are more cost-effective to build and offer greater flexibility than traditional large nuclear plants. In a press release, the company wrote, “Constellation’s agreement with Meta is a market-based solution that essentially replaces the ZEC program and ensures long-term operations of the plant.”
