TikTok’s sister app in China moves to curb ‘newsjacking’, spread of fake viral stories in latest ‘clean up’ of cyberspace

Douyin, the sister app of TikTok in China, has moved to curb ‘newsjacking’, an online trick of expanding influence by taking advantage of viral news stories, in the latest example of its control over content.

Douyin, the sister app of TikTok in China, has moved to curb “newsjacking”, an increasingly popular online trick of expanding influence by taking advantage of viral news stories, in the latest demonstration of the platform’s capabilities in moderating and controlling content. With users increasingly making public statements on the platform, Douyin also pledged to fight the exploitation of hot-button issues on social media, such as impersonating others and spreading rumours. The new rules follow a similar crackdown last month by the internet watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), targeting influencers who fabricate controversial content and exploit trending topics to grab public attention on social media.
