Tiny robot convoy conducts successful endoscopic surgery in a medical first | The robotic convoy’s surgical efficacy was demonstrated using pig organs.

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) researchers have created these tiny medical robots for various applications including drug delivery and surgical procedures.

“After the promising results with the TrainBots in the organ model, we are optimistic that we will be able to develop teams of miniature robots for further tasks in endoscopic surgery,” said Moonkwang Jeong, the first author of the paper. The researchers employed the innovative robotic convoy of three TrainBot units to “simulate” a bile duct surgical procedure. The team used the robotic convoy to guide an endoscopic instrument with a wire electrode to perform electrical tissue ablation within the bile duct.
