Toyota remains world's top automaker in 2024 as China's BYD emerges

Toyota Motor Corp. group sold more cars than any other automaker for the fifth consecutive year in 2024 while China's fast-growing BYD Co. surpassed Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and Suzuki Motor Corp. in vehicle sales for the first time, industry data show.

The small-car unit of Toyota Motor Corp. said the same day it will suspend production at all domestic factories until at least the end of January due to a safety testing scandal. Toyota alone sold 10.16 million cars, down 1.4 percent after it was hit by a vehicle certification scandal in Japan, following which it briefly halted production of some models. File photo taken in December 2022 shows a production line for Lexus luxury cars at Toyota Motor Corp.'s Miyata plant in Miyawaka, Fukuoka Prefecture.
