Trash to tower: MIT engineers 3D-print LEGO-like glass bricks as tough as concrete | The researchers used soda-lime glass, commonly found in glassblowing studios, to produce prototype bricks.
These bricks are designed to interlock seamlessly, similar to LEGO pieces, making them versatile and easy to assemble.
Inspired by the sustainable possibilities of circular construction, MIT engineers are creating a new type of reconfigurable masonry using 3D-printed, recycled glass. “I get excited about expanding design and manfucaturing spaces for challenging materials with interesting characteristics, like glass and its optical properties and recyclability,” Becker says. She and Michael Stern, founder and director of Evenline and former MIT graduate student, collaborated to see if 3D-printable glass could be fashioned into structural units that are as durable and stackable as conventional bricks.
