Trump Ends Tariff Exemption for Small Packages

Starting in September, US buyers on sites like Etsy and eBay may face higher tariffs on goods from abroad.

On Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order widening the impact of those tariffs and making it more expensive for Americans to buy foreign products on sites like eBay, Etsy, and Amazon. Some of the biggest beneficiaries of the policy had been Chinese ecommerce platforms like Shein and Temu, which used de minimis shipments systematically to keep prices low and also build supply chains that could respond to consumer demand in real time. Earlier this week, a federal trade court allowed Trump’s order eliminating the de minimis exemption for Chinese goods to remain in effect pending the outcome of ongoing litigation.
