But many analysts, both inside and outside China, believe that Beijing continues to fudge its overall growth numbers, in part because officials remain deeply concerned with projecting a rosy image of the economy. As China’s economy cooled in recent years, officials have repeatedly sought to muzzle experts who share negative information or dare to question Beijing.
