TSMC awarded $6.6 billion in U.S. grants for chip plants in Arizona

The U.S. government says it will provide up to $6.6 billion in direct funding to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to assist in the construction of three leading-edge chip factories in Arizona.

She told reporters the U.S. government's deal with TSMC, the world's leading manufacturer of advanced chips, is "extremely important for American national security," adding that the new factories will be creating tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. The funding to support TSMC's investment of more than $65 billion in those facilities in Phoenix will come from the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law in August 2022. TSMC welcomed the announcement, with Chairman Mark Liu saying in a statement that the CHIPS and Science Act provides the company with the opportunity to "offer our foundry service of the most advanced manufacturing technologies in the United States."
