U.S. fleet welcomes newest USS New Jersey, the first gender-neutral submarine


A Saturday ceremony in Sandy Hook Bay welcomed the new USS New Jersey into the U.S. fleet.

The commissioning ceremony took place Saturday at the Naval Weapon Station Earle in Middletown, where close to 4,000 attendees including veterans, sailor's family members, and Navy and government officials. The walls of this nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine feature posters from Rutgers University, New Jersey Devils memorabilia, a guitar gifted by Jon Bon Jovi and more. They also met with students at the Pablo Duarte-Jose Julian Marti School Number 28 in Elizabeth on Sept.11, as part of community outreach events in the lead-up to Saturday's ceremony.
