U.S. Transportation Dept. proposes ban on airline fees for family seating — The proposal would make it illegal for airlines to charge families an additional fee to sit together

It would require airlines to seat parents with youths ages 13 and younger together if adjacent seats are available when the trip is booked.

The Transportation Department estimates the rule could save a family of four up to $200 in fees for a round trip — some airlines charge as much as $25 for passengers to change their seats, according to the agency. The proposal is part of the Biden administration’s larger push to crack down on so-called junk fees — last-minute charges that show up during the final stages of payment for services such as flights, concerts and hotel bookings. On Monday, a federal appeals court temporarily blocked a separate Transportation Department rule that would require airlines to disclose fees for things like checking bags and changing flights.
