U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group


Today, 47% of U.S. women ages 25 to 34 have a bachelor’s degree, compared with 37% of men.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand the demographic characteristics driving the gender gap in bachelor’s degree completion in the United States. A 2021 Pew Research Center survey asked Americans without a bachelor’s degree why they chose not to seek one – and found some gender differences in the responses. In 1995, similar shares of Hispanic women and men had a bachelor’s degree (10% vs. 9%), but today the gap between groups is 9 points (31% vs. 22%).
