UK emissions fall over five per cent in 2023 on back of reduced gas demand

Latest provisional statistics show UK greenhouse emissions are now 52.7 per cent below 1990 levels

The update shows total UK territorial greenhouse gas emissions reached 384.2 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) last year, marking a 5.4 per cent reduction on 2022 levels. The government has faced fierce criticism over its failure to come forward with more ambitious plans to accelerate decarbonisation efforts and is currently subject to legal action that alleges it is off track to meet its targets and as such is in breach of the Climate Change Act. The data also comes on the same day as new figures showing demand for heat pumps is continuing to rise, with the number of applications for grants under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme last month climbing 75 per cent year-on-year.
