UK's Online Safety Act comes into force

The UK’s Online Safety Act has officially come into force, ushering in a new era of regulatory scrutiny for online platforms

Effective from yesterday (March 17), online platforms operating in the UK are now required to adopt measures that protect users from illegal content, with a particular focus on criminal activities such as child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Green further warned that platforms should expect heightened regulatory pressure in the next 12 months as further phases of the Act are rolled out, including obligations concerning child safety, adult content, and protection for women and girls. He argues that Wikipedia’s transparent, community-based moderation model, with checks and balances, could be undermined by centralised content control policies designed for Big Tech platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
