UnitedHealth Ransomware Attack Exposed 100 Million People

The US Department of Health's Office for Civil Rights confirms the February Change Healthcare data breach impacts nearly a third of Americans and is investigating the incident.

Data on over 100 million people was exposed because of the ransomware attack on UnitedHealth subsidiary Change Healthcare earlier this year, according to a document from the US Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights. "We continue to notify potentially impacted individuals as quickly as possible, on a rolling basis, given the volume and complexity of the data involved and the investigation is still in its final stages," UnitedHealth Group rep Tyler Mason told TechCrunch in a statement. Hackers in the AlphV/BlackCat ransomware group exploited a flaw in remote-access Citrix software to gain access to Change Healthcare's systems and lock up 4TB of data for ransom.
