US finalizes rules for 'forever chemicals' in drinking water

The chemicals are widespread and tough to get rid of.

Before potential health risks came to light, these chemicals became staple ingredients in everything from nonstick pans, food packaging, fire-fighting foams, and fabric protector to dental floss and menstrual products. A Harvard study published last year found that communities with larger proportions of Black and Latino residents are disproportionately exposed to harmful levels of PFAS in drinking water. In a call with reporters ahead of today’s announcement, EPA Administrator Michael Regan said, “I have to say it’s a good day for the people in this country who have long borne the impact of pollution from these forever chemicals.”
