US launches first-ever 240-ton ship that needs zero crew to operate

The U.S. DARPA has launched the USX-1 Defiant, a 240-metric-ton unmanned surface vessel (USV) designed for fully autonomous naval missions.

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has achieved a major milestone in maritime innovation by completing the development of a prototype unmanned surface vessel (USV) called the USX-1 Defiant. This novel approach is intended to provide several benefits — smaller size, lower costs, increased reliability during prolonged missions, enhanced hydrodynamic performance, and improved resilience against adverse weather and potential threats. According to DARPA, the program promises to establish a robust fleet of USVs, which could be produced on a larger scale to deliver efficient maritime capabilities at a fraction of the traditional costs associated with manned vessels.
