US scientists spot new class of quantum particles in world-first breakthrough | This new class of quantum particles could help improve quantum computers.

Excitonic pairing in fractional quantum Hall states shows two new quantum phases, including a fractional exciton condensate and an unusual type of exciton that obeys fermionic or anyonic quantum statistics.

Kellogg, M., Eisenstein, J. P., Pfeiffer, L. N. & West, K. W. Vanishing Hall resistance at high magnetic field in a double-layer two-dimensional electron system. The effective excitonic pairing between \({}_{2}{}^{2}{\rm{CF}}\) leads to FQHE states along red dashed lines, which are defined by constant integer values of \({}_{2}{}^{2}\nu _{1}^{\ast }+{}_{2}{}^{2}\nu _{2}^{\ast }={}_{2}{}^{2}\nu _{{\rm{total}}}^{\ast }\). Orange dashed lines correspond to constant integer values of \({}_{2}{}^{2}\nu _{1}^{\ast }\) and \({}_{2}{}^{2}\nu _{2}^{\ast }\), which mark the expected trajectory of effective IQHE of \({}_{2}{}^{2}{\rm{CF}}\).
