US to raise tariffs on EVs, batteries, solar cells, and computer chips from China


Soaring tariffs lock Chinese EV manufacturers out of the US.

“To encourage China to eliminate its unfair trade practices regarding technology transfer, intellectual property, and innovation, the President is directing increases in tariffs across strategic sectors such as steel and aluminum, semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries, critical minerals, solar cells, ship-to-shore cranes, and medical products,” a White House fact sheet says. The US already from China’s Xinjiang region, where roughly 40 percent of solar-grade polysilicon manufacturing takes place, over concerns about forced labor and human rights violations along the supply chain. The Inflation Reduction Act signed into law that year also pushes EV manufacturers to ditch battery materials from China if they want to qualify for consumer tax credits.
