While 13 months have passed, there isn't too much that's new and exciting in Wayland proper itself. - wl_shm_buffer_ref() and wl_shm_buffer_unref(), to access wl_shm_buffer underlying storage after the protocol object has been destroyed (e.g. when a client is shutting down).
