What If Data Is a Bad Idea?
Data is reductive. It objectifies. It bureaucratizes. But is it a bad idea?
As a political arrangement it can be countered by a variety of approaches - from law (new regulations, license enforcement, etc…) to systemic changes and technological obsolescence. We can resist this inertia by changing the physical characteristics of data - from “far” (in your warehouse) to “near” (in my hand) and from “dead” (jealously hoarded on private property) to “living” (flowing through the commons). Dutch resistance members, including Willem Arondéus, Gerrit van der Veen, and Dr. Frieda Belinfante, orchestrated a bombing of the Amsterdam Population Registry.
