Why do airlines charge so much for checked bags? The tax code

The answer lies in the tax code.

The government’s data showed mishandled bags peaked in 2007 with about seven reports of lost or damaged luggage for every thousand passengers. Given that congressional action failed, there’s a simple way to avoid higher bag fees: travel light and don’t check any luggage.
