Why Koreans ask what year you were born
Why age is crucial in Korea, affecting language, respect, and social relationships. What is Korean & international age?
In Korean culture age matters, you should always show respect to your elders and any people older than you. They are all used to show different levels of respect depending on which formality and politeness would be adequate towards the listener. Just don’t, omit the “you” Use titles instead (“선생님 / seonsaengnim” for teacher, “사장님 / sajangnim” for manager) Use “언니 / Unnie” , “오빠 / Oppa”, “누나 / Noona” or “형 / Hyung” (for an older friend) “그쪽 / geujjok” (stranger momentarily, can be rude, avoided by many) Name + 씨 / ssi 당신 / dangsin (spouse, songs, speeches) 너 / neo (it’s highly impolite, good for starting fights, okay for close friends)
