There's a fairly common rationale that many people mistakenly believe, which is that somewhere out there was a line that you can cross where your company is making money and has all its ducks in a row, and everything will be smooth and easy from that point on. I can't remember his exact words, but he asked about the status of the licenses, to which the head animator on our team just replied something vague like "It's under control." It benefits them as well by preventing business clients from having to confront licensing restrictions, purchase delays, feature limitations, and lots of other issues that might make a company wonder if the customer service they were paying for was really worth the cost.
