Women in AI: Anna Korhonen studies the intersection between linguistics and AI

Anna Korhonen, profiled as part of TechCrunch's Women in AI series, is a senior research fellow at Churchill College.

I’m most proud of the work where my fundamental research on natural language processing has led into the development of tools that can support social and global good. Current AI, even when seeming highly fluent, ultimately lacks the world knowledge of humans and the ability to understand the complex social contexts and norms we operate with. Questions such as, “Do I have a diverse enough team to develop a fair system?” or “Is my data really free to use and representative of all the users’ populations?” or “Are my techniques robust?” should really be asked at the outset.
