World’s 1st cloned ferret gives birth to healthy kits in a conservation milestone | The introduction of genetic material from a cloned ferret aims to enhance genetic diversity and improve the species’ chances of survival.
A clone of the endangered black-footed ferret named Antonia has successfully given birth, marking a significant milestone in conservation efforts.
Their numbers dwindled severely in the 20th century, primarily due to habitat loss, sylvatic plague, and a sharp decline in their primary food source—prairie dogs. This fortunate discovery prompted intensive conservation efforts, including captive breeding programs and genetic cloning, to prevent the species from vanishing. While Antonia and her kits will remain at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, other ferrets from the breeding program are routinely released back into the wild to aid in population restoration.
