World’s first underwater boron ramjet for hypersonic weapons achieves 90% efficiency

Developed by Chinese scientists for hypersonic weapons, the novel engine achieved 90% efficiency in laboratory tests and can carry weapons at remarkable speeds through air and water.

Data collected by sensors showed that the engine’s exhaust jet velocity exceeded Mach 3, with a combustion efficiency of 87 per cent. The high-energy metalloid, boron, has been recognized by multiple researchers as a potential secondary energy source for liquid hydrocarbon fuel to power volume-limited propulsion devices such as ramjet and scramjet. Various studies have been conducted previously to review recent advancements and challenges in adopting boron-loaded gel fuel for practical ramjet and scramjet propulsion devices.
