X’s blue checkmarks are deceptive, rules EU

X may face huge fines for breaching rules under the DSA.

The European Union has warned X that its blue checkmark verification system violates rules under the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), finding it to be deceptive for users and against established industry practices. “In our view, X does not comply with the DSA in key transparency areas, by using dark patterns and thus misleading users, by failing to provide an adequate ad repository, and by blocking access to data for researchers. Separate DSA probes have been launched to assess whether Meta has done enough to moderate political, deceptive, or illegal content on Facebook and Instagram or safeguard children who use the platforms.
