It’s a common theme of my online output that a little bit of historical linguistics goes a long way, making helpful connections and breaking down psychological barriers. Most of Europe today is a patchwork of spoken languages belonging to the Indo-European family, from English and Irish in the west, to Russian and Greek in the east. The Finnish city of Turku for example derives its name from an East Slavic word for ‘market’ (in Modern Russian: торг ~ torg).
